[music |einstellung [2007] wings of desire]

I sent this to scalesojustice...

A definition of a hipster:

people in thier teens to 20s who generally listen to indie rock, hang out in coffee shops, shop at the thrift store and talk about things like books, music, films and art.

Some visual examples:

...

Do any of these describe you in any way?

Also...

A review of the music I'm currently hearing. Is this for hipsters? I don't really have any confidence in my current taste, choices or preference.

[music |Sufjan Stevens - Songs For Christmas /02 -Come On! Let's Boogey To The Elf Dance]

I ran out to pick up some things for my journey to Florida after christmas and was assaulted by the ghost of christmas-in-your-face. There were people everywhere and they were buying everything. Seriously! I saw people buying so much stupid shit and tons of it.

Whoever said that the ecnomyz is having problems apparently hasn't been out to a store recently. Although I will say that there are lots of clearances and discounts that I normally wouldn't expect to see until after christmas it doesn't seem to change the fact that people have enough money to buy stupid shit this year just like they did last year and any year in my recent memory. It is possible that they are all spending money they don't have but I'm pretty sure that's been going on for years as well here in !America the Great!

On another note, I've been eating cookies all day, doing laundry, making important phone calls and cleaning shit up. With the addition of non-stop christmas tunes blaring from my computer I'd have to say that the spirit of the season is up in my grill and making me dizzy with it's heady scent (it's a mixture of musk and sugary dough).

My little brother asked if the cinnamon candies used to decorate cookies were 'hot fire'. I'm not sure why he used that phrase but I laughed.

I'll end this by saying Sufjan Steven's Songs for Christmas Vol. 1-5 and Vol. 8 are a great alternative for those of you who might be bored with the traditional songs and can't take another reinterpretation of The Christmas Song or Jingle Bells. His few covers of said traditionals are fun and fresh but he shines the most on his original songs, which have great lyricism and the Stevens knack for orchestration and restrained power.

[music |Brand Nubian [1990] One for All /09 - Step To The Rear [4:01]]

1. I have to go to a wedding in an hour or so. Wedding & reception. While all receptions have the potential of being fun, I will be at this wedding & reception with my entire family. People will probably be wondering why I'm not married and my sister will probably try and hook me up with someone who has nothing to say to me.

2. I might be going skiing tomorrow. This has been up in the air for a week and I've still yet to get any definite answers from my family people.

3. I have a call to jury duty for the week starting on Jan. 4th. I'm not sure what this means yet, but I'm calling tomorrow to explain I might not be back in Ohio by that date. Fuck the man!

EDIT-------

I got a christmas present early this year... a snowboard/boots/bindings. Happy Holidays! Apparently when I tell my mom that "I don't want any presents this year. Don't buy me anything" it actually means "Spend all your moneys on something I definitely don't need!!!".
I'm wearing the boots right now trying to convince myself they aren't a size too small. I mean, they're new and they're going to be tight, right? I just don't like the idea of having some awesome gear and going to the slopes tomorrow with some rented stuff.

... Yeah, that's right! I already cannot live without this junk that I will use once a year. Fuck the man! Scales, we gotta go to seven springs this season. Shit, why are we going to florida again? We should be heli-dropping in the Chugach!

[music |Te' [2005] If That Is What Is Being Thought... /09 We Promise With a View...]

I'm currently working hard at getting my 'best of 2009' cd mix and album top 10 done but it is proving to be much more laborious than I first predicted.

At first I was under the impression that very little had come out this year and so my list and song picks were fairly succinct; little to choose from, little to debate over. I think this was because of all the stuff I listened to over the course of the past 365 days, I never paid much attention to the release date if it was something done within the past 6-7 years. When I started going through my music library and searching for 2009 releases, I found that there was tons of great stuff released this year and I had already listened to a fair amount of what I had. I'm now going through 2009 releases that I haven't listened to yet and it's turning out that quite a few of these are also excellent.

So far I have about 25-30 albums to rank in my top 10 and 3.5 hours of single tracks to sort through for the 80 minute mix cd. I will prevail, but I'm guessing I'm going to be right up against the pseudo-deadline of the 18th.

On another note, I was reading up on some of my favorite math rock bands on the interwebs and came across an 'article' explaining the genre and giving examples of its best bands... but it did this all quite poorly and, quite atypical of myself, I felt compelled to demand rectification. I simply addressed one problem with the article, and even with the comments, asking why there was no mention of any Japanese math/post rock bands and then listed a few of major ones.

I then received an email from the site owner asking me to do a write-up and a mix of my favorite j.math.rock bands that would be featured on the site.

I said "ok".

So now I have 2 mixes, a top 10 of 2009 and a review to work on. Yikes!
Oh, and I'll post a link to the mix and review if they turn out to be any good.
